The Hasso Plattner Institute for Software Systems Engineering GmbH (HPI) is an affiliated institute of the University of Potsdam and is located in Potsdam-Babelsberg. The institute's founder and namesake is SAP founder and Chairman of the Supervisory Board, Hasso Plattner.
The HPI was established in 1998 through a public-private partnership. It is supported by the non-profit Hasso Plattner Foundation for Software Systems Engineering. It is legally formed as a limited liability company (GmbH). The state of Brandenburg participated in this partnership by providing the 30,000 m² for the institute's buildings on Lake Griebnitzsee in Potsdam-Babelsberg. The construction of the three multi-story buildings, including the University Institute for Computer Science, cost 36 million euros, of which Hasso Plattner contributed 18 million euros. The other half was financed with European Union funds. At the time of its founding, Plattner declared that he would provide the foundation with 200 million euros for the institute's ongoing operations over 20 years.[3] The campus was inaugurated on October 12, 2001.
