The sea fortress Patarei in Tallinn (originally battery of the sea fortress of Emperor Peter the Great), which is part of the European architectural heritage, is a classical defensive structure that has been preserved in a pure style. It is a memorial to the victims of communism and national socialism and a powerful symbol of the resistance struggle of the martyrs of the Estonian Republic of Estonia.
The building was put into service as an artillery battery and then served as a barracks and prison.
In the Prison Paterei the exhibition “Communism is a prison” can be visited, which informs about the ideology and the crimes of communism as well as about the history of the building. The exhibition area covers around 1,200 square meters in the east wing. The real equipment of the prison, the prisoners' boxes for the courtyard walk and the prison yard have been preserved there.
