In the riverside of the Apfelstädt between Georgenthal and Herrenhof in the Gotha district, gravel has been extracted since the beginning of the 1970s. In the course of natural succession, the former gravel pits developed into mesotrophic clear water lakes with rich submerged vegetation. After the gravel mining, a network of closely neighboring lakes with a total area of 6.5 hectares remained. Today the gravel pits are of great importance for the zoological protection of species in Thuringia. (... from information board)
