17th century, the "Ludwigshütte" clay factory, and finally, the Altenrath clay pit on the edge of the airport grounds.
From 1968 to 1982, clay was extracted here on a large scale (partly illegally). After extraction was halted due to numerous protests, the pit served for some time as a dumping ground, and the pond was used for swimming."
