According to an old tradition, Pausa was jokingly referred to as "the center of the earth" hundreds of years ago.
This designation has remained to this day and has also become known beyond the Vogtland over the years.
In the chronicle of Pausa it is written that Pausa is roughly in the center, but not of the earth, but of the old Vogtland. If you place the compass where Pausa is on the map and extend it to the border of the former Principality of Reuss, younger line (about halfway between Gera and Zeitz) and thus describe a circle, you will generally get the have borders of the old Vogtland.
There have been other interpretations of the proverbial center over the centuries. First it was a water box standing in the market, which was shown to the strangers who visited the place many years ago. Later, when the water tank was dismantled, a yellow button in the Ratskellerwirtschaft and around the turn of the century a brass capsule embedded in the hallway of the Rathauswirtschaft formed the center of attention. When the town hall was extended, the brass button that was so often admired was lost. But a gentleman from Dresden sent money for a new "earth axis".
To this day there has never been a lack of volunteers who took on the important earth axis lubrication business.
Many visitors to Pausa take the opportunity to look at the new earth axis in the basement of the town hall and to lubricate it themselves. Special "Earth axis smear" is on site.

Funnily enough, the secretary in the town hall has the earth axis grease & oil, along with other nice souvenirs.

It's simply a must to lubricate the earth's axis, the earth should run nice and round, shouldn't it? Incidentally, this is possible every day until 6 p.m.
