The beech forest in the national park was used for logging and as a hut forest until the late Middle Ages. The domestic pigs that were driven into the forest for acorn fattening have created a sparse forest for many decades. The huge beech forest was only afforested at the beginning of the 19th century, since the Kurhessian princes had rediscovered their passion for hunting. In contrast to many other regions in Germany, beech trees and no conifers were planted again. Today you hike in the basement forest through the largest contiguous beech forest in Germany.
