Forests in which grazing cattle were kept are called Hutewald. This medieval form of animal husbandry was practiced throughout the Reinhardswald. Only hardy breeds such as Scottish highland cattle, Hungarian steppe cattle, woolly pigs, Galloway cattle or Heidschnucken are suitable for this type of husbandry, as they live in the forest all year round without additional feeding or stabling. Hute forests are no longer important today, but old breeds are kept again in numerous former Hute forests for landscape conservation. Here you can see Heck cattle, sheep and Exmoor ponies.
