The mill of what was then the Goldberg manor was mentioned for the first time in 1450, when Duke Gerhard pledged it to Ulrich von Mentzingen, a knight. Almost 300 years later, in 1715, the mill received a new water wheel, and in 1771 a slate mansard roof was added. The two-storey, plastered quarry stone building was expanded in the second half of the 19th century to include a tower-like brick extension, which is topped by a pyramid roof. The "Königswinter oven" is located in this tower. After a fire at the beginning of the 20th century, a new estate, Gut Groß Goldberg, was built next to the mill, which was fortunately spared. In 1944, the mill, which had been shut down in the meantime, was put back into operation, for which purpose the grinding mechanism had to be renewed. In the 1950s, the building became the property of the city of Mettmann and was used as a residential building. However, the mill fell into disrepair and after a few years was no longer habitable. In order to stop the decay and to save the mill, an initiative group was founded, which is still known today as the "Goldberger Mühle e.V." association. exists. He made it his goal to preserve the mill as a historical monument with an original grinding mechanism as a technical monument and to make it usable as a cultural event space. However, measures could only be taken at the end of the 1990s, when the city transferred the heritable building right. The mill and a water spoke wheel could also be saved and restored thanks to the financial support of the German Foundation for Monument Protection.
