When the Wolfenbüttel trade association opened a collection of "urban antiquities" in the Lessinghaus on February 18, 1894, it founded the first museum in Wolfenbüttel.
The move to Wolfenbüttel Castle followed in 1904 and the collection of antiquities became a municipal museum with many originals on the history of the Welf residence and baroque court culture - the Castle Museum.
In May 2017, Wolfenbüttel received the Bürger Museum a permanent exhibition on the history of the town and citizens.
Both houses form the Museum Wolfenbüttel.
