There is always a lot of action on the large city park meadow

The Festwiese – known to most as just “the big meadow” – is the heart of the city park. There is hardly anything nicer in Hamburg than sitting on a picnic blanket with a few friends on a warm summer evening and watching the hustle and bustle around you.
Entirely in line with the Volkspark concept – to create a park for the people and not just for the rich upper class – the large meadow embodies the idea of social greenery that anyone can use. To create the 12-hectare fairground, more than 60,000 m³ of soil had to be removed by hand and relocated to other park areas. But the effort was worth it, because the heart of the city park beat here right from the start.
But there were also other times when the meadow was not used for carefree walks or picnics: During the National Socialist government, major National Socialist events and parades were held here. And after the war, refugees and those who had been bombed out temporarily found a roof over their heads in emergency shelters on the meadow. These so-called Nissen huts - temporary, semi-cylindrical tin huts - were actually intended for the construction workers of the British headquarters planned in Hamburg, but were then used after the end of the war as emergency accommodation for the many homeless and refugees. It was not until 1951 that the city dismantled it in order to make the fairground and the city park accessible to the public again as a green area until the International Garden Show (IGA) taking place in 1953.
Despite all the trials and tribulations of the times, the meadow is now being used again as its builders had planned it: as a spacious meadow area in the middle of the park, where you can have a picnic, kite flying, play, sunbathe or just relax.
