For a long time, the monastery was the religious, cultural and spiritual centre of the Eisenwurzen. In 1787, it was closed by Emperor Joseph II. Since 1851, the buildings of the former monastery have housed a penal institution. The former monastery church serves as a parish church. Garsten Abbey houses some of the most important works of art of the Austrian Baroque.
