For a long time, the monastery was the religious, cultural and spiritual centre of the Eisenwurzen. In 1787, it was closed by Emperor Joseph II. Since 1851, the buildings of the former monastery have housed a penal institution. The former monastery church serves as a parish church. Garsten Abbey houses some of the most important works of art of the Austrian Baroque.

Garsten Prison is a penal institution. As a penal institution, the prison is designed to accommodate offenders serving prison sentences of over 18 months to life imprisonment. The institution is located mostly in the former buildings of Garsten Abbey, a former Benedictine monastery. It is one of the three penal institutions in Austria in which long prison sentences are served on male inmates.
