Around 980 the "Stirapurhc" was first mentioned.
The mighty keep of the original fortress is still preserved today. In the 11th century the castle reached its importance as the residence of the Otakare. In 1727 the entire complex was destroyed in a catastrophic city fire in Steyr and rebuilt by the Counts of Lamberg as a representative baroque palace. The Lamberg'sche noble library and sandstone figures are located in the inner courtyard.

The footbridge starts at the Working World Museum and leads to the other side of the Steyr.
From here, a spiral staircase leads up to Lamberg Castle. There is a panorama path around the castle with vantage points of the confluence and the Steyrdorf (open April to October).
