Perched atop a hill in the town centre, Totnes Castle was once an important defence. It's one of the best-preserved Norman motte and bailey castles in England so definitely worth a visit. At the top of the hill, there are great views over the town, its surrounding countryside and the River Dart. The castle is managed by English Heritage and is open from 10am - 5pm. Tickets for adults cost £5.90.

This 14th century fortress on a motte was built to strengthen the 11th century castle and the earthen ramparts. The ramparts offer a beautiful view of the entire valley of the Dart
