The Royal Air Force memorial commemorates the crash of a British Avro Lancaster bomber, which went down over the marshland near Spa on the night of April 22-23, 1944. The aircraft belonged to No. 550 Squadron of the British Royal Air Force and was returning from a mission over Germany when it crashed in the dense fenland for reasons that are still not fully understood. All seven crew members – members of the British RAF and the Canadian RCAF – were killed.
