The most idyllic spot in Merksplas is certainly Carons Hofke. There are picnic tables, beautiful ponds, an eco toilet, information boards about the former Pastorijhof. It is a domain of approximately 5 hectares N of Merksplas village. The motte-and-bailey castle of the Heren van Merksplas used to be here. The Heren van Merksplas donated their property to the Norbertine Fathers of the Saint Michael's Abbey in Antwerp. For over 600 years, a white beer pastor lived here. During the French Revolution, this ecclesiastical property was appreciated and sold. A few owners later, this domain became a country residence of the Caron family from Turnhout. In 1990 the ancient "Burcht" was sold to the municipality of Merksplas and renamed "Carons Hofke". This municipal park is characterized by stately old beech avenues and water features. The park is managed without pesticides and in an environmentally friendly way and you can use a public compost toilet. Villa Caron now functions as a homestead “Villa Ter Borcht”.
