Beer has been the most popular alcoholic beverage in this area for a few thousand years. But how is it brewed? What is malting and why is yeast so important?

National beer museum De Boom tells you all about the tools, devices and machines that have been used to brew 'the golden water' over the last two hundred years. Ancient means of transport such as a handcart and an ice sled show how the beer kegs were transported. Posters and other advertising material, beer bottles and beer glasses give an impression of the many small and large Dutch breweries.

The museum is located in the historic building of the former De Boom brewery, near Alkmaar's famous cheese market. It opened in April 1987 and has an official museum registration. The administration and organization is completely taken over by volunteers.
