The Elbe-Lübeck Canal is a 61 km long federal waterway that connects the Elbe near Lauenburg with the Trave in Lübeck and thus with the Baltic Sea.
The Elbe-Lübeck Canal connects the Baltic Sea to the network of Central European inland waterways and is therefore of particular importance. It was built according to the plans of Lübeck's construction director Peter Rehder and opened on June 16, 1900. Along with the Kiel Canal, this was the only German canal of this era that was designed from the outset for 1000-ton ships - a considerable size at the time.
