The bat educational trail is located in the park of the former Würzburg canal next to the Burkarder Tor.

Until the middle of the 20th century, the so-called Burkarder Umlaufkanal was located here, which between 1680 and 1892 was the most important bypass route of the Streichwehr in the Main above the Old Main Bridge. Today's park is a very important habitat for bats in the city of Würzburg.

The park offers bats all the structures they need to survive in a very small space: cool, frost-free winter quarters, a hunting area rich in insects and summer quarters. Some species, like the pipistrelle bat, live here all year round. Others only come by on their hikes or to hunt. The “Burkarder See” is a Würzburg “bat hotspot”. There is a lot of exciting information to learn about these extraordinary creatures on the five information boards along the nature trail. As a special highlight, the ultrasonic calls of the bats can be experienced live with the bat detector station from spring to autumn. A sixth information board is dedicated to the extraordinary history of the former Burkarder Umlaufkanal.

Below the fortress, Marienberg, lies St.Burkard. The bat trail is located at Lake Burkarder. Five boards around the lake tell vividly and with many pictures about the life of the mysterious mammals and their habitats in Würzburg! :-)

It is worth walking the bat trail, really a lot worth seeing, but also informative.
