As the editor of the magazine Die Weltbühne, he was convicted of espionage in the internationally sensational Weltbühne trial in 1931 because his magazine drew attention to the illegal rearmament of the Reichswehr. In 1936, Ossietzky received the retrospective Nobel Peace Prize for 1935.
