Bust of Pope Benedict XVI. in front of the parish church of St. OswaldConnected to Traunstein:Pope Benedict XVI (real name Joseph Ratzinger; born 1927 in Marktl; died 2022 in the Vatican) spent his childhood in Traunstein, lived in Hufschlag, municipality of Surberg, did his basic training with the Wehrmacht in the barracks, attended the archbishop's study seminar in Traunstein, celebrated his first Mass in the church of St. Oswald. Benedikt himself described Traunstein as his "native town", which is why the town is also part of the "Benediktweg" cycle pilgrimage route.
