Story of Lavin

Lavin was a closed village from the 13th/14th century. The wall paintings in the church, which was built around 1500, are of art-historical importance. The village was destroyed in 1499 and 1622 by Austrian troops. The fact that Lavin looks so different today from other villages in the Lower Engadine has to do with a later event, the village fire of 1869. A conflagration and a chain of unfortunate coincidences - a defective telegraph, men at the cattle exhibition in Samedan - destroyed the part of the village between the church and Lavinuoz in ruins and ashes. The reconstruction was not left to the Laviners, but was planned and carried out by the canton. Instead of the 68 houses that burned down, only about half were rebuilt. And this reconstruction characterizes Lavin to this day. Because the canton not only determined the number of new houses to be built, but also the distance between them. This was set at 6.2 meters, the road width at 4.5 to 5 meters. Because the people of Lavin were also confectioners and many sought and found their fortune in Italy, most of the money, plans and master builders came from the south.
