From the late 14th century, the Bamberg bishops, especially Bishop Lamprecht von Brunn, built a city fortress in Forchheim, which became their main residence outside the Bamberg cathedral immunity.
After extensive archaeological and architectural research, it is one of the best-researched facilities of this time in Central Europe.
The oldest part of the castle is the so-called Kemenate of the Schultheißen, which was still partially preserved in the west wing and was annexed to the older city wall in 1339.
The core of the plant is the so-called Great Kemenate, the former residential building, built from 1391 in the east of the castle. There is an elaborate stone chamber air heating. Of great art historical importance are the Gothic murals, some of which probably come from Bohemian masters.
Today's main use of the building is as an archeology and city museum.
