The chapel was built around a wooden statue of Mary, which was brought along by an expiatory pilgrimage from Maria Einsiedel in Switzerland, to give a worthy setting and to celebrate the Messopfer there as well. In 1867 the foundation stone was laid and in 1869 the chapel was inaugurated. On this occasion, the statue of Mary was gilded. The dark color of the face was left.
