The old gasometer on the former Phoenix-West blast furnace site in Dortmund-Hörde shapes the skyline of the south of Dortmund. The 76.5 meter high giant barrel with a capacity of 120,000 cubic meters is still unused.
The landmark in Dortmund's Hörde district, visible from afar, was part of the Phoenix-West industrial plant and was used to store coke oven and blast furnace gas. The blast furnace gas from the Phoenix-West blast furnace, which was produced in varying amounts, was captured and stored in it.

After the final shutdown of the blast furnace facilities, the industrial area was demolished. The gasometer has been preserved and has been on the list of monuments of the city of Dortmund since March 2002, along with the other systems of the former Phoenix-West plant. The Hoesch gasometer is part of the "Industrial Culture Route".
