                          The Plaza de la Virgen sits on the site that once was the forum of Roman Valencia. It is surrounded by impressive buildings and home to lots of pigeons. You can't miss the impressive Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados on the eastern side of the square, and on the western side is the Gothic Palau de la Generalitat, the seat of government for the Valencia region. Also in the square there are some cafes with plenty of outside seating for the obligatory people watching.

                          In the centre of the square is a fabulous fountain which represents the irrigation of the Turia River. We recommend to sit at the edge of the fountain for a while and watched kids chase the pigeons, enjoying the sense of community in the square.

                            Der Plaza de la Virgen, der Platz der Jungfrau, ist der wohl bekannteste Platz Valencias. Das liegt an verschiedenen Faktoren. Hier konzentrieren sich eine ganze Reihe der berühmtesten Sehenswürdigkeiten, so das spätgotische Portal Puerta de los Apóstoles der Kathedrale, der Turia-Brunnen, die Basilika, einige Paläste sowie der Regierungspalast, der Palau de la Generalitat. Zur Beliebtheit bei den Touristen trägt noch bei, dass der Platz verkehrsberuhigt und Fußgängerzone ist. Allerdings gerieten wir etwas in Verlegenheit, als wir den Platz besichtigen wollten. Die Bauten und die Lage stimmten eindeutig, doch die Hinweistafeln am Platz sagten etwas anderes. Der in jedem Reiseführer als Plaza de la Virgen beschriebene Platz heißt auf Valencianisch Plaza de la Mare de Déu und dieser Name steht auf jedem Straßenschild.
                            In der Basilika
                            Wer an einem Donnerstag in der Stadt ist, sollte sich auf keinen Fall ein Spektakel entgehen lassen, dass hier seit mehr als 1000 Jahren stattfindet – das Tribunal de las Aguas. Dabei geht es um das so wichtige Wasser für die Bewässerung der Felder. Landwirte, die sich darin uneins sind, können in einer mündlichen Verhandlung ihre Streitigkeiten vor einem Schiedsgericht beilegen. Alle zwei Jahre wählen die Bauern aus ihren Reihen acht Leute für dieses Gericht.
                            Das Spektakel findet immer donnerstags gegen Mittag vor der Puerta de los Apóstoles statt. Wenn es auch nicht mehr so viel Streitigkeiten wie früher gibt, ist die Veranstaltung doch jederzeit ein Magnet für die Touristen. Allerdings gilt auch hier der Satz : Zeitiges Kommen sichert die besten Plätze. Bei den Massen, die sich vor dem Portal drängen, haben wirklich nur die ersten eine gute Sicht auf das Geschehen.
                            Gottesdienst in der Basilika
                            Belebt ist der Platz auch zu anderen Zeiten nicht zu knapp. Doch kann man hier auch ganz gut entspannen, denn rund um den Platz gibt es mehrere Cafés mit Freisitzen. Wer es eiliger hat, kann auch eine kurze Rast am Turia-Brunnen einlegen. Die große Figur auf dem Brunnen stellt den Fluss Turia dar, die kleineren die acht Kanäle, mit denen die Felder um Valencia bewässert werden. Der Brunnen ist ein beliebter Treffpunkt und besonders schön am Abend, wenn er angestrahlt wird.
