From the observation dune, you can overlook the Pirolatal and see it all the way to Melkhorn Dunes. Nice place for a little break ...

The Pirola Valley has recently been called “Krähenbeerental”. The island's drinking water reservoir (freshwater lentil) is located in the Pirola Valley. The entire island gets its drinking water from there. Rainwater collects in this valley and seeps away. In the past, not all rainwater seeped away and the Pirola plant thrived. At some point the golf course was built, requiring so much water that the freshwater lens shrank and the valley became drier. The plant disappeared.
Now the predominant plant in this valley is probably the crowberry ;)
It is also very important for coastal protection that no salt water from the North Sea spills into this valley, because then the duckweed would no longer be drinkable for a very long time and the residents would need a water pipe from the mainland.

The valley is named after the plant Pirola, which has become rare after the valley was drained.
