The cross commemorates the last chief forester in Mainz, Carl Friedrich von Hausen, who was shot here on May 27, 1892 on Ascension Day and died on the way to his apartment in Lorsch. Two people from Lampertheim were named as the perpetrators, but it was not possible to prove their guilt in an extremely lengthy process. The trial occupied the courts for 23 years.
