Deadman's Island is closed to the public and is currently claimed by the Department of National Defence. The island was an ancient burial site for First Nations people, who buried their dead in cedar boxes high in the tall trees. Chief Joe Capilano told Pauline Johnson the story of the First Nations, how they fought bloody battles over the island, and how the settlers also claimed the land.

To this day, it is disputed whether the Canadian government or the First Nations are the rightful owners of Deadman's Island.
