'Deadman's Island' is closed to the public and is currently being claimed by the Department of Defense. The island was an ancient burial ground for the First Nations people who buried their dead in cedar boxes high in the tall trees. Chief Joe Capilano told Pauline Johnson the story of the 'First Nations', how they fought each other bloodily for the island and how the settlers also claimed the land.
It is still disputed today whether the Canadian government or the First Nations are the rightful owners of Deadman's Island.
