The German Shepherd Museum in Hersbruck is located in a listed half-timbered ensemble of 16th century farmhouses with a large inner courtyard, a barn and another building with a garden.

As early as 1905, there was discussion about establishing a museum in Hersbruck. At that time, however, the considerations failed due to the question of which rooms a museum could move into. It would take more than twenty years before the idea became concrete: in 1926, Paul Holzmann offered the Eisenhütlein 7 property to the city of Hersbruck for sale in order to solve the space issue. With the property, the city took over Holzmann's local history collection. Five years later, a museum committee was founded, which decided on the content and organizational matters of the museum for many years. In addition, two rooms in the town hall were made available as a depot in 1931 - now work could begin on building a collection. Rudolf Wetzer, who played a key role in promoting the museum, called the local community shepherds together for a meeting - they donated objects from their work culture to the collection of the emerging museum. This resulted in the museum's focus on pastoral culture; This is also how the shepherds' meetings came into being, which the German Shepherd Museum in the city of Hersbruck still celebrates today as “Shepherds' Day” on January 6th. Wetzer ran the museum on a voluntary basis for many years. Although most of the rooms in the house in the Eisenhütlein were still inhabited in 1932, works by the painter Leonhard Raum were shown as the first special exhibition.
