In the first half of the 17th century, a Roman Catholic clandestine church was founded on the Hoge Gouwe in Gouda by the Franciscan Father Gregorius Simpernel. Initially, the worship services took place in a house "Het Cromhout", which was replaced in 1732 by a newly built clandestine church.[1]

After this church burned down in 1767, a new church was built, probably designed by Pieter de Swart. In 1853, after the restoration of the episcopal hierarchy in the Netherlands, this church officially became a parish church, which was given the name Sint-Jozefkerk. The buildings in front of the church were demolished in 1877. About ten years later, the Gouda architect C.P.W. Dessing built a new presbytery in Neo-Renaissance style. The same architect-contractor was also commissioned to design and build a new church. Between 1902 and 1904, the new neo-Gothic Saint Joseph's Church was built. The church was called the Gouwekerk by the Gouda population.

In the sixties of the 20th century the church was abandoned by the Franciscans and the church came into use by the parish of Onze Lieve Vrouwe Ascension. The Kleiwegkerk of this parish was demolished in 1964/1965. In the 1970s, the church board decided to sell the church. Since 1979, the church has been owned by the Johan Maasbach World Mission Foundation. In 2018 the church was sold to a private investor. At the end of 2018, the church was empty and an ice rink was temporarily operated in it.

The Gouwekerk is a former Roman Catholic neo-Gothic cruciform church in the Dutch city of Gouda. Located on Hoge Gouwe Street in Gouda's city center, the church dates back to the early twentieth century.

The Gouwekerk is a cruciform church built of red brick. At the intersection of the roof is a hexagonal, partially openwork spire. This crossing tower is visible from afar and, at approximately 80 meters, is the highest point in the city.
