Today's alley between Norderstraße and Schiffbrücke emerged from a courtyard that the merchant and shipowner Oluf Samson had built behind his house on Norderstraße. He built 8 small "rental shacks" on the south side of the courtyard, and their number grew quickly.

At the beginning of this century, this alley was mainly home to workers who were displaced by the "oldest trade in the world" during the depression in the 1920s and 1930s. Many owners of the houses used as brothels have been very cautious about taking measures to preserve the structure.
