The 21 kilometer long Emster River, which is developed like a canal over long stretches near Lehnin, flows from the town through the Klostersee towards the Havel. The Emster Canal, on the other hand, begins blindly a little further west in Lehnin in a bowl-like widening where the barges used to turn. The canal flows into the southwestern area of the monastery lake after about 1.6 kilometers. There is a beautiful hiking trail with many piers on its banks.

Nice path and partly bicycle road along the Emster Canal to the Kessel, through allotment gardens and banks with lots of boat moorings. The canal was built at the time for the transport of bricks.
