The chapel goes back to an infirmary (Domus leprosum), the Schwartau infirmary for lepers, established in 1258 by the Lübeck bishop Johannes II von Diest. The infirmary, whose residents were obliged to live a monastic life, received a chapel in 1289. After the leprosy subsided, the infirmary fell into disrepair from the middle of the 15th century and was finally converted into a home for the elderly.
Today's chapel was built on the foundations of the chapel from 1280 in 1508.

The Georgskapelle or Siechenkapelle on Eutiner Straße is the oldest building in Bad Schwartau. The history of the chapel goes back to the middle of the 13th century.
As early as December 25, 1260, the sick sisters of Schwartau received a new house rule from Bishop Johann II von Diest (1254-1259). The Lübeck cathedral chapter had built a hospital for lepers, a leprosarium, in the lonely Au lowlands in front of the city gates. A chapel was added to the hospital around 1280.
