The first documentary mention by Walter von Wellenberg goes back to 1204. In revenge, because of the attacks on their merchants, the people of Zurich destroy the castle on behalf of Rudolf von Habsburg in 1258. Ulrich von Wellenberg is taken prisoner. In the course of the next 100 years, the rebuilt building on the Wellenberg saw several owners and finally came into the possession of the Hohenlandenberg family around 1358, who also own the current ruins in Neuburg. In 1512 the not-too-squeamish Mötteli von Rappenstein took over the rule.
