The Hessian State Archive in Darmstadt, which is now an authority subordinate to the Ministry of Science and Art and is responsible for taking over all state documents in the area of the Darmstadt and partially the Giessen administrative district, emerged from the archive of the Landgraves of Hesse-Darmstadt. From 1725 to 1993 it was housed in the Residenzschloss DA (Castle), initially in specially designed storerooms.
