The fortress is built in fine brick masonry with natural stone decorations on an almost pentagonal plan. After 1906, the main front building and the caponier were reinforced with concrete. The fortress features a traditional battery facing the city. A large part of the defensive moat has been filled in. As a result, the redout input and the low batteries are gone. The reduit itself has been largely restored. The domain is equipped with concrete tracks and numerous warehouses.

At hangar 23, the simple cross on a brick plinth placed high commemorates the sixteen executed Belgians who were executed at Fort 5 during the First World War. The war memorial by stonemason Clément Jonckheer (1872-1932) near the entrance to the inner fortress also commemorates this event.

Watch out - there is a fort here!
From 1860 the government built a defensive belt around the city of Antwerp. It consisted of a city wall and eight forts and was state of the art in defense technology for the time. In the meantime the city walls have disappeared and only the fortresses remain.

Even today the fort is a bulwark - for environmental protection. There is an "organic class" that organizes nature-educational events, beehives and sleeping places for bats in summer as well as hibernation opportunities.

Fort 5 had to ensure the defense of the Mechelen-Antwerp track. After 1906 it was partly reinforced with concrete.
It is the only fort where people lived during the First World War
were executed. Fort 5, together with Hof Ter Linden, forms one
large green area of almost 90 hectares.
