Napoleon wanted to develop Antwerp as a war port to defeat England. In 1803 he gave the order to build two docks in the Nieuwstad. Under the leadership of Engineer Mengin, two rivers were drained and the Boerenkwartier demolished. 2000 workers and prisoners of war excavated more than 1,000,000 m³ of soil. On January 1, 1811, the first ship entered the dock through the Bonapartes lock. After the fall of Napoleon, the docks were given a trading function. William I donated them to the city. From 1903, the Klein Dock was renamed the Bonaparte dock, which is today a museum dock.

The old dock from 1811 and built by Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte and named after the Emperor on August 10, 1903, is located on the Rijnkaai and the Sint-Aldegondiskaai, on the south side of the Bonaparte dock. But the design for the Bonaparte dock and the Willem dock came from Nicolas Mengin.
