Memorial to the plane crash on January 28, 1966 in Bremen.

This crash of a Lufthansa Convair CV-440 was the heaviest Lufthansa flight accident to date after WWII with 46 fatalities (42 passengers + 4 crew members).

Among the fatalities were 7 swimmers from the Italian Olympic team, their trainer and an Italian reporter who were invited to the 10th international swimming festival in Bremen.

The first memorial stone was unveiled about a year after the crash, on March 4th, 1967 by the Olympic Committee and the Italian Swimming Association not far from the crash site near the airfield. This original stele gives the names of the 9 Italian nationals who died in an accident.

In 1991 this stele was moved from the original location a few hundred meters further to its current location near Norderländer Straße.

On May 18, 2019, a second stele was unveiled at this memorial site with the names of all 46 victims of this disaster.
