The sail training ship Alexander von Humboldt, often simply called Alex, is, like the Gorch Fock, a steel German barque. The Alex was built in 1906 as a lightship under the name Reserve Sonderburg. In 1986, it was decommissioned as a lightship and converted into a sailing ship. From 1988 until October 2011, the barque, familiar from Beck's beer commercials, served as a youth and training vessel.
