The wallThis wall is almost 850 years old! This makes it the largest and one of the oldest brick buildings in Northern Europe. King Valdemar the Great of Denmark had the wall built. In this way he renewed the Danewerk once more. Waldemar wanted to protect the Danish kingdom from raids by the Slavs and Saxons. At the same time he demonstrated his strength to the German king. The wall stretches westwards for more than 4 km. Today it lies mostly invisible in the earth wall. The special significance of the brick wall is clear from Waldemar's epitaph: According to this, he built this fortification "to protect the entire empire". A few decades later, domestic and foreign policy conditions changed. The Danewerk gradually lost its importance as a border guard. More information at Danevirke Museum or

Very varied hike along the Margerethen Wall and the Krummwalls. It's worth it.
