Schleswig is the oldest city in northern Germany and was first mentioned in 804. At this time, Schleswig was a secondary settlement of the Viking metropolis Haithabu. When this was destroyed by the Slavs in 1066, Schleswig's rise began. Christianity spread, the power of the Vikings dwindled and Schleswig became an important episcopal see in the Middle Ages.
