Hiking Highlight
On the Werewolf trail is reminiscent of Peter Stubbe, who was publicly executed in the most famous werewolf process in the 16th century in Bedburg for werewolfing in 1589. On the circular route one gets to know the individual stations of his life and the typical Rhine-Erft landscape, which belongs to the Rhenish lignite mining area.

Today, in modern phantasy sagas, werewolves enjoy some popularity. In the Middle Ages, however, it was relatively awkward to be suspected as a werewolf, as happened to the rich farmer Peter Stübbe in 1589. He was accused of having committed 16 murders, many rapes and more. This leads to a clear execution: first torturous wheels, then to be on the safe side: head off. And finally burn the corpse, so that the devil's spirit is indeed insulated. This story took place in Epprath, a district of Bedburg about forty kilometers west of Cologne. And right here takes one of the werewolf trail on a, not just spooky, but beautiful trip into the landscape of Cologne Bay.

A very nice place here on the lake. Again, you can read about the legend.

Peter Stubbe lived as a freelance farmer in the tiny village of Epprath, right next to Kaster. Historians now believe that he suffered from a rare disease that made him behave abnormally: possibly lycanthropy. Those affected believe in this disease themselves that they can turn into a wolf. At his farm Stubbe lived together with his daughter and another relative. That already made him suspicious in the eyes of his neighbors. Whether it was the jealousy of his property or his unusual way of life - the nerd Peter Stubbe was accused of being a werewolf, convicted and executed in a particularly cruel manner on 31.10.1579. Because under the torture he had confessed to numerous crimes. The news of the "atrocities" of the werewolf and his execution spread throughout Europe.Source: weltenkundler.com

Nice round for a nice long walk with some information boards. Easy to handle in 2 hours. Unfortunately, not all signs are easy to find. We did not find stations 5 and 7.
