Where tunnels were once built for car traffic, you will only encounter racing cyclists and hikers on this former road. Because on this old commercial road, which was built between 1818 and 1823 as the first road across the Grisons Alps, it is considered a monument between Thusis and Rongellen and is free of car traffic.

Here you can watch nature in peace on the wide road as it reclaims this section of the route. You can also venture a look into the deep Viamala valley.

The Viamala, Via Mala, Veia Mala means "bad road" and refers to the 8-kilometer-long path along the Hinterrhein (Upper Rhine) between Thusis and Zillis-Reischen in Graubünden. The gorge was the most difficult obstacle to the Splügen and San Bernardino Alpine passes.

The historic right-bank route, the Veia Traversina, was improved by the construction of the Traversina footbridge, as was the new suspension bridge built in 2005, which also serves as a staircase.

The Via Spluga is a Swiss cultural hiking trail, number 50, on the historic Alpine transit route from Thusis (Graubünden) via the Splügen Pass to Chiavenna (Italy).
