Thusis is a city that has historically been a transit point, a crossroads for people and goods along the valley. This is reflected in its urban layout, with tightly packed houses, wide lanes for the transit of horses, carriages, and pack animals, as well as spacious cellars and warehouses. Numerous hotels, guesthouses, and a myriad of shops line the main road. From Thusis, the Via Spluga follows two different routes, entering the Viamala gorge.
