The river has always been a little in the shadow of the Elbe and Alster. For shipping, the Bille never had the economic importance of the Elbe, and as a recreational and recreational river, the Alster was always ahead. On its approximately 65-kilometer route from the source in the Duchy of Lauenburg to its mouth in the North Elbe, the Bille presents itself as a river of contrasts: What flows as an idyllic river through Schleswig-Holstein becomes a partly canalised industrial river in Hamburg. The Bille can be roughly divided into three sections: The Upper Bille describes the small river from its source near Linau east of Hamburg in the Duchy of Lauenburg to Bergedorf. The middle Bille meanders from Bergedorf to Billstedt. This is where the last, heavily canalized section of the Bille begins, which finally flows into the North Elbe at the Brandshof lock between Hammerbrook and Rothenburgsort near the Elbe bridges (source: ndr.de).

I love the Boberger Niederung. One of the few nature reserves with good connections by the S-Bahn. That you are allowed to swim here in the NSG is only due to the fact that you were allowed to do so many decades before the protection status. The area is very varied. Moor in the northwest, along the Bille in the south, in the east the beautiful slopes with the orchid terraces, please have a look at them in summer and the dunes in the middle. And of course the popular swimming lake with a large sunbathing area. Really amazing. You will find a 20 km hike criss-cross with me in every corner of the area. It is worth it .. And freely plan a break in the information center and on the dune. But you can also linger on the terrace of the café at the glider airfield. Always open except when it rains.

      Greetings Janice

From here, a very nice hiking trail leads to the Nikolaikirche directly along the Bille.
