      In 1808 the first Jewish family settled in Werden. Initially, the Werden Jews belonged to the Essen synagogue community. They were independent by the Weimar period at the latest. In 1932 Kupferalt was connected.

      The Werden Jewish cemetery on Pastoratsberg (today located in the Heidhausen district) was laid out after 1830. There is evidence of his gravestones from 1844 to 1938; 70 gravestones have been preserved.

      The cemetery, hidden in the forest, can be easily reached on foot from the youth hostel on Pastoratsberg or from the “Haus am Turm” conference center.
