The Upper Gate, along with the Mähntor (Mahn Gate), is part of the almost completely preserved medieval fortifications surrounding Nabburg's old town. From its rectangular base with a passageway rises an octagonal tower, on the exterior of which the claws for the portcullis are still visible. Built approximately 500 years ago, this structure served to secure the northwestern exit of the town, guard the former bridge over the nearby moat, and monitor the road leading to Kemnath.

In 1913, due to a significant increase in traffic, a second, larger archway was cut into the town wall. A staircase leading from this archway provides access to the five-story building, which has been privately used as an office for several years. Together with the adjacent former blacksmith's shop, the ensemble is the setting for the legend "The Horseshoe at the Upper Gate."
