The Stieglkeller is a beer garden and restaurant on the Festungsgasse in the old town of Salzburg at the foot of the fortress hill. The brewery was first mentioned as Prew on the stairs for the first time in 1492 in the Gstättengasse. In 1820, the former Stiegl brewer Josef Schreiner bought the house "Festungsgasse No. 206". He redesigned the cellar, which was driven into the fortress mountain, and used the garden above it to serve cellar beer during the summer months. That was the birth of Stieglkeller in the precursor form, as he presents himself today.
