The Mozartsteg was opened in 1903 as a toll bridge. In 1921 the toll was waived. The toll booth on the left bank of the Salzach is still preserved and is a listed building.

The Mozartsteg is an Art Nouveau bridge for pedestrians in the city center of Salzburg. He is known regionally for his beautiful design and internationally for his appearance in "The Sound of Music". The Mozartsteg was completed in 1903 and was privately financed by the "Mozartstegverein". This association then also owned the bridge, for which a road toll was levied. It connected Steingasse / Imbergstrasse with Rundolfskai and Mozartplatz.
The Mozartsteg remained private property until 1920. A small toll house was set up on the side of the old town for the collection of road tolls. This little house is still there today and is run as a handicraft shop. No road tolls have been levied since 1921: The city of Salzburg bought the Mozartsteg and opened it up to pedestrians and cyclists.
