The small town of Vianden is one of the main tourist resorts in Luxembourg, although the city itself has only about 2,000 inhabitants.Vianden can look back on a long and eventful history dating back to the Middle Ages. The former county Vianden was then almost as large as the present Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and included in its heyday 136 villages. Center of the county was the fortified city of Vianden, which was protected by a ring wall and 24 semi-circular towers and the so-called Hockelsturm from enemies. The wealth and power of Viandens were based primarily on the large number of local artists and artisans who achieved national recognition. In the following centuries, various wars caused that the power of the county increasingly decreased and the towering over the city castle was severely damaged. Since 1977, the castle Vianden is again in the possession of the Luxembourg state and has since been restored in painstaking work. Nowadays, the castle is considered the landmark of the historic city.
